About The Barndo Company
At The Barndo Company, we bring more than twenty years of hands-on experience in building, developing, and transforming properties across our local communities.
Experience Across Every Stage of the Build
Our background reaches across residential home building, design and construction, mechanical and electrical work, commercial construction and redevelopment, land use planning coordination, land development, and multi-family projects.
We have been involved in projects from the earliest ideas on raw land through to finished homes, businesses, and community spaces.
Jeff Plunkett
Founder | The Barndo Company
“Construction has never just been my career. It has been part of who I am for as long as I can remember.
My story in this industry actually started before I ever received a paycheque for it.
When I was in high school, I became the first student in my school board to peer tutor a construction class, helping teach students a grade younger than me. I wasn’t chosen because I had decades of experience—I was a kid. I was chosen because I had an incredible passion for construction, I understood it, and more importantly, I had an ability to communicate that knowledge to other people.
Around the same time, I was given another opportunity that had nothing to do with swinging a hammer. I was asked to speak to younger students, including students facing challenges in school, about making the transition into high school.
Looking back now, those two experiences probably explain me better than anything else.
I love building, but I also love teaching people what I know.
And somehow, more than two decades later, that’s exactly what I’m still doing.”

Learning How Buildings Actually Work
I started my professional career working alongside my father, who was a self-employed refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic.
We travelled throughout Ontario working on just about every type of building imaginable—houses, small commercial buildings, high-rise residential, multifamily, mixed-use and industrial projects.
That experience gave me an education that couldn’t come entirely from a classroom.
I learned that a building isn’t just lumber, concrete and drywall.
It’s a collection of systems that all have to work together.
Mechanical. Electrical. Structural. Building envelope. Heating. Cooling. Ventilation. Moisture. Energy. Occupant comfort.
That early experience became the foundation of my understanding of building science and how buildings actually perform.
From there, I was recruited by another company to become the project manager of a brand-new mechanical maintenance department.
When I started, that department had one employee. Over approximately five years, we grew it into a team of twelve.
During that time, I never stopped educating myself. I continued my post-secondary education while working full-time, taking course after course, certificate after certificate, constantly expanding my knowledge of construction, design, building science and building systems.
I’ve always believed that if I’m going to give someone advice about their building, property or investment, I have a responsibility to understand what I’m talking about.
And I’m still learning today.
From Construction Manager to Developer
The next major chapter of my career brought me into custom residential construction.
I was recruited as a Construction Manager for an established custom home builder, where I spent more than nine years managing people, contractors, trades, sub-trades, consultants and projects ranging from approximately $500,000 to $2 million.
But during those years, something else started happening.
I started developing my own real estate.
I became fascinated by the development side of construction—not simply how to build a building, but how to look at a property and understand everything it could potentially become.
That eventually led me heavily into multifamily development.
I’ve developed and own multifamily properties, including triplexes and six-unit projects, and I’m currently developing a three-storey apartment building that I also have ownership in.
When Ontario introduced major housing changes through Bill 23, I immediately started studying what those changes meant for property owners and developers. I became an early adopter of those new opportunities, successfully pursuing three new residential units on a single property and then applying that strategy again.
That’s when one of the biggest philosophies behind my business really took shape:
Never look at a property only for what it is today. Look at what it could become tomorrow.
There is opportunity everywhere.
Sometimes you just need to know where to look.
Built Properly, Built to Last
“We are builders at heart. We take pride in creating places where families can settle in, businesses can grow, and communities can benefit from thoughtful development. Whether we are working on a custom home, a rural building, a redevelopment project, or helping guide a larger vision forward, our focus stays the same: build it properly, build it responsibly, and build it to last.”
From Development to Inspection:
Then I Became the Building Inspector
After spending years on the construction and development side of the industry, I made a decision that surprised a few people.
I became a Building Official in Ontario.
I wanted to understand the other side.
I had spent years building projects, managing construction, coordinating consultants, studying building science and developing property. Now I had the opportunity to work inside the regulatory system and understand construction from the enforcement and municipal side.
That experience was invaluable.
I worked with homeowners, contractors, designers, developers and professionals while dealing directly with building permits, inspections, code compliance and development.
But it also exposed something that bothered me.
People were overwhelmed.
Homeowners didn’t know where to start.
People were paying for drawings before understanding their zoning.
They were hiring consultants before understanding their property.
They were designing buildings before understanding their budget.
Great ideas were dying because someone didn’t know there was another path available.
And sometimes people were spending thousands—or tens of thousands—of dollars before realizing they had started the process completely backwards.
I realized that the construction industry didn’t simply need another builder.
It needed people willing to teach.
That realization became a huge part of what I wanted The Barndo Company to represent.
Why I Built The Barndo Company
I started The Barndo Company because I believed construction could be done differently.
I watched construction costs climb dramatically. I watched homeowners stretch their finances to the limit trying to build something for their families. And I watched an industry become increasingly complicated, expensive and intimidating.
I knew there had to be a better approach.
I wanted to combine everything I had learned from construction management, building science, mechanical systems, design, real estate development and municipal building regulation and use it to help people make better decisions.
Today, we design and build barndominiums, custom homes, agricultural buildings, accessory dwelling units, multifamily developments and commercial projects.
But we’re not interested in simply being another construction company.
We strategize before we design.
Before somebody spends thousands of dollars drawing a building, I want to understand the property.
- What does the zoning allow?
- What opportunities exist?
- What restrictions exist?
- How should the building be positioned?
- How can we simplify construction?
- Where can we save money without sacrificing quality?
- What decisions today could save tens of thousands of dollars tomorrow?
- And most importantly:
- What does the client actually need?
Because building something more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean building something better.
I believe premium construction comes from better thinking, better planning, better details and better execution.
Experience That Protects the Project
Over the years, we have developed a strong understanding of the full construction and development process. That experience helps us navigate planning approvals, land development, design coordination, budgeting, construction, and project execution with confidence. It also helps us protect our clients’ investments, spot challenges early, and uncover opportunities that may not be obvious at the beginning.
What This is Really About
At the end of the day, I’m not passionate about buildings simply because they’re buildings. I’m passionate about what buildings can do for people.
- A custom home can become the place where somebody raises their family.
- An accessory dwelling unit can create income, house a parent or give a child somewhere affordable to live.
- A farm building can help a family operation grow for another generation.
- A multifamily development can create housing while building long-term wealth for the person who took the risk to develop it.
And sometimes, a simple conversation can prevent someone from making a $50,000 mistake.
That’s why community matters so much to me.
I believe in giving back. I believe in sharing knowledge. I believe in helping people when I can.
I want to build incredible projects, absolutely.
But I also want to create smiles, opportunity, knowledge, wealth and something families can pass down to the next generation.
Because I don’t want my legacy to simply be a list of buildings with my name attached to them.
I want it to be the people I helped along the way.
Twenty-plus years ago, I was a high-school kid standing in a construction classroom helping teach other students because somebody recognized that I had a passion for building and an ability to share it.
In a lot of ways, nothing has changed.
- I’m still building.
- I’m still learning.
- And I’m still teaching.
- I’ve just got a much bigger classroom now.
